Nr. 397, Soft Cell - Cruelty Without Beauty

Soft Cell war ein Synthpop-Duo das 1979 in Leeds, England gegründet wurde. Es bestand aus Sänger Marc Almond (geb. am 09.07.1957 als Peter Marc Sinclair Almond in Southport, Lancashire) und 
Keyboarder David Ball (geb. am 03.05.1959 Chester, Cheshire; gest. am 22.10.2025 in London). Beide Musiker lernten sich als Kunststudenten an der Leeds Beckett University kennen. 
Finanziert von David Ball's Mutter wurden erste Titel produziert. Ein Plattenlabel wurde auf  as Duo aufmerksam und gab Soft Cell einen Plattenvertrag. Nach einigen zunächst weniger erfolgreichen Versuchen gelang Soft Cell dann aber 1981 der absolute Durchbruch, als sie mit "Tainted Love" - einem Remake eines Titels von Gloria Jones aus dem 1964 - einen mega Charterfolg landen konnten. Weitere Titel folgten, allerdings nicht mit gleichem Erfolg. Nach der Veröffentlichung von vier Alben (1981: "Non-Stop Erotic Cabaret", 1982: "Non-Stop Ecstatic Dancing", 1983: "The Art of Falling Apart", 1984: "This Last Night in Sodom") trennte sich das Duo 1984 vorübergehend, kam aber 1989 wieder zusamen. Es dauerte aber noch bis 2002, daß mit dem Album "Cruelty without Beauty" wieder ein Album veröffentlicht wurde. Nach weiteren 20 Jahren erschien 2022 das Album "Happiness Not Included" als wohl letztes Album der Band. Anläßlich des Todes von Dave Ball spielen wir in AAS heute das Album "Cruelty Without Beauty". Marc Almond startete nach der (vorübergehenden) Trennung der Band 1984 im übrigen eine erfolgreiche Solokarriere.
